New BIM guidance released by SWG

BIM awareness and adoption in the UK is continuing to grow. While the benefits were initially more understood by architects and construction personnel, facility and property teams are now also benefiting from the advantages of BIM. Having access to all building information in a digital format can greatly improve efficiency. For example, gaining direct access to the location and specification of all assets and inventory on site, knowing where sensors are located, or being able to find the exact measurements of any area, can result in hours of time saved.

The concept of digital twins is also becoming more widely understood. With the BIM model as a foundation, a digital twin provides an exact digital replica of a building, including assets, its environment and inhabitant behaviour using sensor data. By better understanding the interaction between the building and these three elements, facilities managers can improve building operation and maintenance. New ideas and strategies can be tested on the BIM model in a risk-free virtual environment before any changes are made to the physical components.

BIM is not just for new buildings – where there is no BIM model available, there are now a variety of methods for creating one. Service Works Global (SWG) has authored a new white paper that will help facilities managers understand if a BIM model is right for their organisation, how to create one, and the process this entails.
