Swedish Film Institute

“No ordinary building,” is what the Swedish Film Institute’s founder Harry Schein reputedly said as a starting point for the construction of the new Film House in Stockholm, Sweden. And he got what he wanted. The building has been making an impression ever since it was completed on January 18, 1971. Now there is also a digital twin.

SWG is proud to have been entrusted to support the Swedish Film Institute in their digitalisation journey by creating a digital twin of the Film House building, located in Gärdet, Stockholm.

Through advanced laser scanning (our Scan to BIM service), georeferencing and AI-based modelling (our Plan to BIM service), the 29,000m² building has been fully BIM modelled, providing new opportunities for management, development and supporting long-term decision-making for one of Sweden’s most iconic cultural environments.

To maximise the benefit of the digital model, the Swedish Film Institute also chose to invest in SWG’s Geminus Base software. Having the BIM model available within Geminus Base’s graphical software – a powerful tool for managing models, drawings and building information in daily work creates added value, enabling the Film House team  to:

  • Ensure correct geometries as a foundation for future renovations or extensions
  • Simplify daily operations, maintenance planning and enable better resource optimisation
  • Ensure trusted, structured data on areas, leases and maintenance assets – making day-to-day management easier, more accurate and more efficient
  • Make virtual site visits to the building through SWG’s point cloud viewer integrated into Geminus, to support informed maintenance visits
  • Strengthen the organisation’s sustainability efforts through digitalisation and smarter property management, in line with its environmental and sustainability policy.

A common result of modern surveying is that the actual building area deviates from older drawings. In this project, the laser scan revealed that the building was approximately 5,200m² larger than architectural drawings indicated – an important insight for long-term planning and management.

By publishing the BIM model in Geminus Base, the entire organisation now gets a quick, intuitive and detailed overview of the building, plan and rooms.

“SWG’s work on site in this vibrant building with 24/7 operations went very well. We are highly satisfied with the delivery of the finished model in Geminus Base together with training delivered. The fact that we can now make the building available in detail in Geminus means that many more people in the organisation – not just operations and management – can easily access information, which means time and cost savings,” says Denice Gustavsson, property manager at Film House.
