The FM market is buoyant, but many of the newest technological developments are still theoretical, according to the 2018 UK Facilities Management Software Survey. Run by Service Works Global in partnership with leading FM news provider, FMJ, this major new survey asked a cross section of UK FM professionals about their work, challenges and use of technology.
The results present a picture of an industry with a stable but reserved outlook, keeping data at its foundation but refraining from investing in the newest technologies such as AI (artificial intelligence) and sensors. The use of FM software, however, has increased to 77% (up from 43% in SWG’s previous survey in 2016). 80% stated this was to manage their data for efficient and accurate reporting and 76% chose their CAFM system to help improve FM performance. While integral CAFM functionality such as maintenance scheduling, asset management and health and safety remained core to FM services, expansion into integration with sensors, AI and AR are not yet on the radar for most.

Survey highlights include:
- 77% of respondents reporting using CAFM software to manage their facilities
- System integration is becoming more commonplace, with 72% reporting linking at least one other system with their CAFM application
- Use of mobile is still strong, with 70% using PDAs and more planning to do so in the future
- Only 5% feel robotics and AI will be implemented in their organisation in the next 12 months
- Data and system security is gaining more focus as FMs look towards increasing their use of the internet of things (IoT)
